"Are you ready," Marc asked. Aedus replied with a quick and big nod. "You've had a lot of practice for the past ten years, Aedus. Our real adventure has just started and fierce battles await," Marc added. Aedus made the fire on his back grow larger as a response, a sign that the Cyndaquil is ready for anything.

"Hostile." Marc pointed at a rustling bush behind Aedus.

Goal: Raise Aedus to Level 14 and evolve him into a Quilava.

From out of the rustling foliage came a somewhat slow, small female at level six. It was a Numel! However, this one looked peculiar. Its whole body was a lighter colour, almost as if she were made of painted clay, with a blue pattern surrounding her hump instead of the usual green. The rings around her eyes were a bit darker, and she regarded Aedus curiously, flapping her ears with a shake of her whole neck. "Numel?" She questioned the Cyndaquil, intrigued by the fellow fire type. She had never seen something like him before!

Marc could not believe his eyes. His eyes widened, his mouth curled into a wide smile, and his heartbeat rocked out of surprise and joy. He has seen a Numel many times before and he can tell that this one is shiny. After ten years, he finally got the chance to see a shiny Pokémon in person. For a trainer who has just started his journey, Marc's pretty lucky. Could this be a good omen?

Scaring this jackpot away is the last thing Marc wants. He tried not to lose his composure and let Aedus interact with the beauty. Aedus thought the same about not scaring the Pokémon off, the flames on his back had their intensity reduced, Aedus didn't want to look like a threat. "Cyndaquil!" Aedus greeted the shiny Pokémon with a wide smile. "Cynda, cynda, quil," Aedus cheerfully introduced himself and Marc, and tried to make friends.

The Numel responded positively to the Cyndaquil's friendliness, even if he was still wary of the human. He knew what trainers were like, and it wasn't long ago that the entire mountain had been threatened by them and their recklessness. "Num, Num Numel!" She chimed back, a few embers shooting up into the air in a playful display. She seemed to literally sparkle in the sunlight, her glossy coat glistening, even with how short the fur was, "Numel~!"

He has to make his presence known. Marc just felt that way. "Hi there," he spoke in a very friendly tone paired with a smile on his face. Aedus enjoyed the little show and took a moment to admire the wild Numel's fur in a special way. Did he just fall in love at first sight? Marc was too busy trying to make the Numel comfortable with him, a human, to notice that Aedus is acting a bit uncommon. Aedus would brush his stubby hand through the glossy fur and praise it sweetly.

Of course, he hasn't forgotten about that Ember. Aedus spit out a ball of fire from his mouth and caught it with his hand. He spit out a second and a third and started to juggle the three Embers with his hands hoping that Numel will like it. Marc finally noticed the way Aedus is acting. Aedus is friendly but it is uncommon for him to show off like this. The last time he saw Aedus do this juggling trick was when he felt attracted to a wild Nidorina.

Numel blushed, crying out cheerily. She had acknowledged Marc, but only briefly, far too absorbed in playing with the Cyndaquil. "Numel, num~!" She cheered, unusually hyperactive for a Numel that was usually so graceful. Trying to match his little antics, she suddenly summoned glowing spheres from the ground, firing off an impressive ancient power attack! The Numel might have been young, but it appeared she had tricks up her sleeve, too! "Numel, numel, numel!" She wasn't very fast, but putting Cyndaquil's head, she playfully ran about, as if wanting to initiate some bonding game.

The sight of the two Pokémon is indescribable. It is both cute and sweet at the same time, but not even those two words could precisely describe the sight. Marc however, is feeling a bit too awkward and out-of-place, poor guy. He remained silent when he realized that there is something going on between his best friend and the stranger. He decided that he'd give them some space. Besides, it would help make capturing Numel easier but that's not really the reason Marc would let Aedus hang around with Numel. For now, Marc would just start thinking of a good name for Numel.

Aedus felt very awesome when he delighted the alluring Numel. It appears that he won her heart. The glowing spheres surprised Aedus, he stopped juggling causing the Embers to fall on the ground. She must have inherited this technique from her parents. Because of this, Aedus felt even more infatuated. At the same time, he worried. He wanted to match that with another trick but couldn't think of anything else. As if to save his worry, it seems that Numel wants to play tag and try something else. Aedus grinned, feeling energetic as ever shown by the flames on his back burning with greatest intensity. "Cyndaquil! Cynda! Cynda," Aedus replied and he ran around the Numel in circles trying to make a cute impression.

Cyndaquil was much faster than her, which wasn't really a surprise given that her whole family were slow and stocky by design. Numel seemed to be giggling, or the closest one could describe her noises, trying to dodge around her new friend, impressed by the flames. She could produce an impressive heat wave, the temperature in the air around them rising. It was obvious that a lot had been inherited from her parents, and she was a lucky Pokemon in all manner, especially for a trainer to have. "Numel!" The creature teased, sticking her tongue out, going in for a playful tackle.

Numel opened her mouth and created a ball of orange fire in it. She then released a wind of flames around them from the ball. This took Aedus aback. This girl is just full of surprises. First, she demonstrated Earth Power and now Heat Wave. Aedus suddenly had theories. What if Numel had been in some rough fights before and is battle tested? Another theory that has more possibility is that she is the daughter of two mighty Camerupts. He wondered how his trainer would react to this, he turned to Marc and saw that Marc wasn't really paying attention with the two of them. Marc was looking up the sky still thinking about a name for the Numel.

Aedus looked backat the Numel and stared, impressed and felt more infatuated. Wherever this girl would go, he'd want to tag along. Numel bumped him and it sent pessimistic thoughts through Aedus' mind. What if Numel realizes that she's better than Aedus in terms of combat and moves? Would that turn her off? Dealing with it and manning up, Aedus gets himself back in the mood. That playful Tackle sparked Aedus' desire to fight. He explained to Numel how he felt about wanting a fight but not against Numel, he could never hurt such a beauty of nature like her. Aedus suggested that maybe they can challenge a wild Pokémon and fight together.

=I suppose it would be alright to put Numel into my signature since she'd be part of Marc's team sooner or later.=

Numel being a descendant of wild, mighty Camerupts was more accurate than her being especially battle tested. Of course she'd fought with her friends and family for fun, and helped defend her territory in minor squabbles. It was more that she knew a fair few egg moves, and had practiced them in the wild. Pinning Aedus down still, she listened, agreeing, "Numel, num~" The Pokemon chimed, but then shuffled off of him to peer up at Marc with a bit of apprehension. She liked Aedus, too, but that meant leaving behind all that she knew. Was she ready for such an adventure or commitment? What about her family? "... Numel..."

Marc noticed that there was sudden silence. He turned at the two Pokémon and the Numel's eyes stared back at his gray eyes. "Candace," he questioned, unsure about why the Numel is looking at him. Marc also wants to see how Numel would react to the proposed name. Aedus got up and jumped on Numel's back. "Cynda cynda," he admired the warmth of her body and it just feels good to have mounted like this. Aedus began daydreaming of one day storming into combat while riding on Numel like a knight on a horse.

Numel was confused as to what Marc meant to begin with, timidly tilting her head, little sparkly ears twitching. She looked back as Cyndaquil jumped onto her hump, hoping nothing came along that would result in him getting blasted in the face by some sort of fight move. "Numel, numel..."

She wasn't sure about a name, or even joining the trainer, and so she avoided the subject entirely. Instead, the shiny informed her friend that if they wanted to battle as a team, there was a perfect opponent for his trainer that had started causing trouble in the area. A rather nasty Charmeleon that somebody had abandoned, and was now stomping all over the place like he owned it, causing trouble for the poor bugs and steel types who crossed him, and anything else for that matter. She looked between the pair, waiting to know if it was a challenge they were up for. Her family would certainly appreciate somebody handling it, it saved them the fuss.

=What would happen if Marc, who doesn't have any badges, were to challenge Flannery? I mean, would you, a moderator, have Flannery use a low leveled team that matches Marc's?=

Seeing how Numel didn't catch what he meant by the name, Marc made the message clear, "I was hoping you'd like the name Candace." Aedus didn't move away from the little volcano's mouth on Numel's back. He's pretty sure Numel wouldn't make a prank of blasting him away. He listened to what Numel had to say. If the outrage of that Charmeleon continues, sooner or later Numel's parents might get involved. This would be a perfect opportunity for Aedus to completely win Numel's heart and her parents' respect and complete trust. This should also help the two develop a stronger bond. Aedus told Marc that he wants to meet this Charmeleon.

"Charmeleon is an interesting Pokémon. I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to see and capture one. Lead the way, Candace," Marc replied with a friendly and assuring smile. Marc thought that this abandoned Pokémon just wants a hug.

"Capture," Cyndaquil thought to himself. "Cyndaquil... Cynda cynda cynda," Cyndaquil reminded Marc that he's doing a Nuzlocke run.

"Hm!" Marc realized it.

In a Nuzlocke run, a trainer may only capture the first Pokémon met in an area. Should the met Pokémon faint or run away, the trainer has a second chance. Should the trainer once again fail to capture, the trainer can no longer capture any Pokémon from that area. Marc considers Numel, the first Pokémon he met in this area, as captured. Capturing the Charmeleon would break the rule. Marc set this entire Nuzlocke run himself so nothing can stop him if he were to cancel this Nuzlocke for the sake of capturing an awesome Charmeleon. Being an easygoing guy who dislikes pressure, Marc made up his mind. "We're cancelling this Nuzlocke run," Marc replied.

((No, Marc'd simply get his arse beat. Also, how is he understanding his Pokemon's speech so perfectly?))

Marc wasn't entirely wrong, but it wasn't as if Numel had been seeking them out for the sake of a cuddle. Rather, she had stumbled upon the pair, and that was that. "Numel, numel." It was very wrong of him to presume that Numel had been captured, too. She didn't accept the name he offered, and she had not been placed into a ball. In fact, the throwing of one might have her run away. If he was going to proceed with such naivety on his journey, he would be shocked. Not all creatures were as amicable so as to give off such false impressions to human beings.

Regardless, Numel turned her hump to the boy, beginning to lead him further into the route. While grass grew in the lower areas, almost hiding the fences in the wild growth, most of the route consisted of uneven, rocky terrain which Numel could navigate far easier than Marc was naturally able, and perhaps even Cyndaquil given how domesticated he was. Luckily, she was slow, and therefore not too hard to keep up with unless the land slowed either of them down.

=Bulbapedia wrote, "An experienced or empathic Trainer may be able to communicate quite fluently with their Pokémon, if only intuitively." As per Marc communicating easy with the wild Numel, I figured it would be okay to have Marc, a Pokémon Trainer, the ability to understand other Pokémon because of his occupation. But, I don't mind implementing changes if necessary.=

The tone of Numel's voice is enough to tell Marc that she gave a negative response. "You don't like Candace," Marc tried to confirm. A bit puzzled while still having theories that he has kept to himself in the mean time, Aedus remained silent, figuring out how to invite Numel. He really wanted this girl to join the adventure but only his trainer can have the last word or 'go signal' for things like this. Marc is a smart man but he's a rookie Pokémon Trainer and there is much for him to learn. This inexperience may give him big failures and upsets in the following days.

Marc, who still considers Numel as a new team member, tagged along while keeping an eye on their surroundings. "Aedus, why don't you jump on my shoulder instead? Maybe Numel finds it hard to walk through a rough terrain with someone on her back," said Marc concerned. Aedus felt slightly embarrassed and awkward, Marc has a point. "Cyn cyn quil," Aedus wanted an honest answer from Numel.

Numel had no problem at all with Cyndaquil on her back. He was fairly light, and she was a tough thing, one had to remember that. She lived in an environment that fostered patience and enhanced physicality. Cyndaquil was probably heavier to Marc than he was to her. "Numel, numel." She said simply, continuing to guide them upwards. As she continued east, it was obvious that the foliage growing there had been charred and trampled carefully, which didn't make sense when compared to the rest. The habitat was full of fire-types, after all, and it seemed they managed to respect their environment! The remnants of large footprints, not remotely resembling Numel's or her line, could be faintly deciphered in the ash and dust. Charmeleon was near.

((Nono, it's okay. I think Marc's perhaps known Cynda long enough for them to maybe bond like that, but I'd say calling trainer an 'occupation' is a stretch. :P Unless he's been doing it for years to the point it's borderline professional, it's not exactly a job lol.))

=Marc received Cyndaquil on his 10th birthday and that means they've been together for 10 years.=

"Aedus and I have been here many times before. I've grown some sort of personal attachment to this habitat and that makes me want to stop that Charmeleon even more," Marc explained, still keeping an eye for anything suspicious. He looked down and his eyes caught odd footprints. He bent his legs backwards and took a closer look. "Wait up. I don't remember a Pokémon here with footprints like these. A foot with three digits. I think we're getting closer. Let's follow these," Marc said with a big grin on his face. The smell of smoke and burnt objects is in the air. That Charmeleon must have burned something here and walked away, leaving its footprints here. "Cyndaquil!" Aedus smashed his fists together, feeling more excited than worried about meeting an evolved Pokémon. "I'm not really looking forward to battling it. It must feel lonely and upset about being abandoned like this. Attacking would only make it angrier and less trusting," Marc told Aedus. Aedus felt slightly disappointed but he's not that immature. He picked himself up and nodded, agreeing with Marc. "What do you think, Numel?"

There was no evidence to suggest by footprints and charred foliage alone that Charmeleon had been abandoned, especially given the fact that Pokemon could be found in all sorts of different places. In Kanto, the Charmander line preferred volcanoes. It could easily be the case that a wild one had got there somehow. Numel didn't know for sure, since she hadn't met it, but felt that didn't excuse its actions.

"Numel num." Numel disagreed. She liked Marc's trail of thought, but this thing was aggressive, and if the human didn't want to battle it then he shouldn't have agreed to try and deal with the problem. He'd just end up getting himself killed like that. She rattled the explanation off in her own tongue, stopping to look at the pair, wondering if they'd proceed regardless or turn back.
