A Journey Begins in New Bark

Shaanu Maru awoke to find Pika sleeping on his face.
"Pika! Get off my- GAH!" In waking up Pika, Shaanu startled the poor electric mouse and got a nasty ThunderShock.
"Ow... I've got to stop that..."
"Pika chu... [I'll say...]"
"SHAANU!" Shaanu's mother yelled to him from downstairs. "You're going to be late! Professor Elm just called to make sure you were still coming!"
"Ok Mom! One sec!" Shaanu hastily changed into his clothes, grabbed his PokéGear off of his table, and rushed down the stairs, Pika following close behind.
"Good morning, honey," Shaanu's mother said as she hugged her son. "Eat your breakfast, both of you," addressing Shaanu and Pika.

After a breakfast of toast, Oran Juice, and LOTS of apples (mostly for Pika), Shaanu and Pika said goodbye to Shaanu's mom and made their way toward Professor Elm's lab.
"Pika, these will be the first steps of our journey. Let's make them amazing!"
"Pika pikachu! [Let's do this!]"

Upon approaching the lab, a girl rushed towards Shaanu, ending up in bumping into him.
"Whoops! Sorry! Gotta go!" she shouted, albeit a bit rudely, and her Pokemon companion, a Zorua, seemed to reprimand her for her rudeness. The girl sighed and walked back to Shaanu, bowing a bit and murmuring a better apology. The Zorua looked satisfied; as if the apology was just enough, then, as the girl turned to leave, the Zorua frowned again. Waving at Shaanu with a paw, it said to Shaanu using Telepathy, "Sorry about my trainer, Emmy. She's in a hurry to get to Professor Elm's lab for a starter Pokemon." The Zorua told 'Emmy' to properly introduce herself, and the trainer sighed before complying.
"I'm Emmy Altava, this Zorua here is my friend, and in a way... My 'mentor', Hershel Layton, but I call him 'Professor Layton'."
(Hehe xD Professor Layton references if you know the game series.)

(I've heard of those games, but I've never played them. Heck, I barely have any games on my DS that aren't Pokémon!)

"Why hello Emmy, and hello Professor Layton, nice to meet you. I'm Shaanu and this is my friend Pika." Shaanu introduced himself, and Pika attempted to shake hands with both Emmy and Layton. "Pika and I were actually just on our way to the lab as well. Have you decided on a starter yet?" Shaanu was still struck that Layton seemed to be in charge of Emmy, but he tried not to show.

Emmy was about to answer when Professor Layton stopped her.
"Make sure you choose one that'll give us an advantage! I'm weak to Bug and Fighting-Types, so pick a Pokemon who won't have that problem." he reminded her, earning rolling eyes and an exasperated groan.
"I know, Professor! I haven't forgotten." Emmy replied to the little Zorua, who in turn frowned again. He seemed to be about to speak when Emmy bitted in and just told Shaanu which starter she had chosen.
"I chose Cyndaquil. A Fire-Type will totally burn up those Bug-Types! Cyndaquil can withstand Fighting-Type attacks really well, too."

"Cool. I really haven't thought much about getting a starter, because Pika's been my only Pokémon for the last two years." Shaanu spoke to Emmy, but then addressed Professor Layton.
"Professor Layton, why do you keep telling Emmy what to do? I'm just really curious," Shaanu asked as the neared Elm's lab. Simultaneously, Shaanu thought Wow, I really have no idea what to start with...

Emmy nodded, understanding what Shaanu was saying. Then, she looked a bit surprised when he asked why the Professor was telling her what to do. The Zorua cleared his throat and stood up on his hind legs to explain nore better. "Well, my boy, I tell Emmy here advice and such since I have lived for much longer than she. I'm 35 years old in human years, and I'm at level 40. Of course, I don't battle these days, and only serve as a guide for her." he explained, having pulled out some sort of chart to explain further. There were pictures describing everything he spoke about. Once he was finished, Professor Layton put away the chart and stood on all fours again.

"Pika chu? [Where'd that chart come from?]"
"Ok, I guess that makes some sense... So I was just thinking, and I've decided to choose Totodile. It's a strong Pokémon and should help me get around waterways, mostly because I fail at swimming - and I live right next to the river!" Shaanu explained.
"Pikachu! Chu pika! [Shaanu! We're here!]" Pika exclaimed as they neared the lab.
"Great! Totodile, here I come!"

(So I had this crazy idea that Totodile would be all distinguished and stuff because it's so contradictory to the usual portrayal and I could name him Frederick.)

(Oh, that's actually a very good idea. ^ ^ Professor Layton is also very distinguished. He's the 'perfect gentleman'. :3)

Emmy and Professor Layton both followed Shaanu and Pika inside the lab, knowing full well what to expect. Piles and piles of books, research notes, and notebooks cluttered the floor making it nearly impossible to see the tiled floor. There was a path made in the books for anyone to get through to Professor Elm so Emmy stepped through the path. Professor Layton simply climbed onto Emmy's shoulder.

(I forgot to mention; Professor Layton wears a brown top hat with a white stripe XD)

"Aw, Professor, I thought you said you were going to clean the lab over the weekend!" Shaun exclaimed as he walked past piles of Pokémon evolution charts, books on how to make apricorns, a book with Celebi on the front, and random papers not even related to Pokémon, like shoes and toothbrushes.
"You really need a Minccino or ten, Professor," Shaanu said as he walked towards the end of the room.

(Any way I can find a Porygon? I want to base it off of a supercomputer from the War Games movies.)

(That'll have to wait. You're already getting a new Pokemon right now, so wait a few pages of RPing at least. ^ ^)

Emmy looked as though she wanted to thoroughly clean the lab, as she was sort of an assistant as well to Professor Layton, who apparently got a job as a Pokemon Teacher in a Trainer School somewhere. It was a ridiculous sight; seeing the Zorua teach a group of eager students about Pokemon. Emmy always knew that the Professor often had troubles grading papers or cleaning his office, and so that's what Emmy did for him. It was the thing that made them become trainer and Pokemon. Inside the lab, Professor Elm stood beside three PokeBalls. He noticed Emmy and Shaanu and waved, looking slightly sheepish as he heard Shaanu's outburst earlier.

"Thanks for having us come Professor," said Shaanu. "I'm excited to have another Pokémon on my team, as it's always been just Pika and I. Anyway, I'm going to pick Totodile, and I believe my friend Emmy here will be choosing Cyndaquil."
Living in the same town as Elm allowed Shaanu to get to know him, making it unnecessary for introductions.
"Pika pikachu pi! [Grab the Poké Ball already!]" Pika impatiently poked Shaanu.

Professor Elm just laughed a little at Pika's behavior and handed Shaanu the PokeBall containing Totodile. "Be warned that the Totodile is a bit... 'Special'." he warned the boy, scratching the back of his head. Emmy and Prof. Layton seemed to pay no mind. She grabbed the Cyndaquil's PokeBall, sending it out from its 'containment' and naming it 'Luke'. The Cyndaquil seemed to have noticed Prof. Layton's 'authority' as the Pokemon began to appear as though it wished to be like the Professor.

Hell yeah I'm giving it a nickname. I dub thee... Frederick!

"Go, Totodile!" Totodile appeared out of the Poké Ball in a blue flash of light, strangely calm.
"Hmm, that's odd, I thought Totodiles were more... energetic... Anyway, I'll name you Frederick!" Frederick looked up at Shaanu and smiled. "Toto toto dile! [I thank you for my name, my good man]."
Pika stared at Frederick, then asked "[What is wrong with you?]"
Frederick's simple reply was "[There is nothing wrong with my, good Pikachap, I am simply a gentle-Pokémon. An uncivilized Pokémon like you wouldn't understand]" Pika resumed his confused staring.

"Anyway, Pika, Frederick, let's get going! Those badges won't win themselves!" Shaanu called to his Pokémon and they ran towards the front door.
"Bye, Professor Elm! Thanks for the Totodile! Nice to meet you, Emmy and Professor Layton! See you around!"

Emmy noticed thar Shaanu was leaving and looked as though she didn't want him to leave so soon. Prof. Layton smiled a knowing smile, and asked her if she would like to travel with Shaanu. The girl instantly nodded and rigorlously bobbed her head up and down. Her eyes were just sparkling, and she rushed after Shaanu, shouting out a 'Wait!' as she did so. Prof. Layton just smiled and relaxed on Emmy's head.

By the time Emmy had left the lab, Shaanu was already near Route 29.
"Okay guys, the first gym is in Violet City, so we've got to go to Cherrygrove, then up through Route 30 to Violet. Mr. Pokémon is up there too, so maybe we can say hi!" Shaanu was ecstatic to get to Violet and get a gym badge, but he then heard a voice behind him, calling "Wait!" He looked behind him to see Emmy, Prof. Layton resting on her head, running towards him.
Why would Emmy be trying to catch up to me- She must want to travel with me! That should be fun, I mean, the more the merrier! were Shaanu's thoughts as Emmy grew closer.

Emmy huffed and wheezed when she reached Shaanu's location and placed her hands on her knees. She took in some deep breaths before speaking clearly to Shaanu. "I... Would like to travel with you. Is that okay?" she asked with a hopeful expression. Prof. Layton rested clamly on Emmy's head, not saying a word. He merely sipped some tea from a teacup who knows where he got from. The tea appeared to be Earl Gray, and judging by the way he drank it, it was a favorite of his.

"Sure! I'd love to have a companio-" Shaanu was cut short as Frederick popped out of his Poké Ball, then spoke to Prof. Layton "[Professor, have you any more tea? I am quite parched.]" Out of nowhere, Frederick retrieved some cucumber sandwiches and offered one to a very confused Pika, Shaanu, Emmy, and Prof. Layton.
What the hell is wrong with this Totodile? Were Shaanu's thoughts as he proceeded towards Route 29, still confused by the recent event.

Prof. Layton seemed to also be surprised by the Totodile, but nodded with a smile. He handed the Totodile a teacup filled with jasmine tea, as the Earl Gray had run out. Then, the Zorua took one of the sandwiches and thanked Frederick. Emmy took a sandwich as well, but was genuinely a bit creeped out by Frederick.
"Great! Let's get going then, Shaanu." she said, changing the subject and moving on.

"Yeah, I agree. Let's go, Frederick, you can eat later."
Route 29 was beautiful. Berry trees lined the far edges, with Apricorn trees dotted here and there. Shaanu's only problems were the surprisingly neat patches of tall grass. Shaanu was genuinely freaked out by the grass, and tried to run through it to avoid it. Of course, it was counterproductive, as just a few steps into running, he was attacked by...

It was a wild Pidgey!

The Pidgey looked as though it were extremely angry at Shaanu for something. It charged at the boy with a Tackle attack, aiming to strike the boy. Prof. Layton, Emmy, and Luke all cried out to warn the boy.

Pika jumped in front of his best friend, ThunderShocking the Tiny Bird Pokémon.
"[You watch it, Pidgey!]" Pika yelled at the wild Pidgey.

The Thundershock attack landed and hit the Pidgey, damaging it severely. It was a super-effective attack, after all. The Pokemon slowly fluttered to the ground, where it weakly used Growl at Pika, knowing it would not have much of an effect.

Prof. Layton looked at the Pidgey and began to think. The Pidgey was acting rather ferocious. Normal Pidgey wouldn't seem so angry unless there was a good reason. He looked around some, and finally his eyes landed on what was beneath Shaanu's foot.
"I see." he muttered, earning some attention from Emmy. The girl looked confused, but said nothing as the Zorua jumped onto the ground and stood between Pika and the Pidgey.

Pika was about to fire off another Thundershock when Prof. Layton jumped in between him and the Pidgey.
"What is it, Prof. Layton?" Shaanu asked.

Prof. Layton pointed at something made of straw and twigs underneath Shaanu's foot.
"I've managed to piece everything together. The reason the Pidgey is so angry is because when its nest fell out of its tree, you, Shaanu, accidentally stepped on it, ruining all the hard work the Pokemon had put into making it. Isn't that right, Pidgey?" he asked the bird Pokemon. Said Pokemon nodded in agreement, seeming happy and relieved that the Zorua understood. Emmy looked as though she also understood, the same expression coming from Luke.

"Oh Arceus, I'm sorry Pidgey. Can we help you rebuild your nest?" Shaanu kneeled down to speak to the bird Pokémon.
"Wait. I have an even better idea. How you you like to travel with me, Pidgey?"
