It's never to late to start something...

Nick had been walking this path so many times in his life, many times he had seen Route 34 through the eyes of his loyal partner Ralts, but now he was seeing it with his own eyes for the first time in his life. Sure, the pictures Ralts had let him see hadn't been as blurry as the ones he saw now, but nonetheless it was a unique experience for him.
The little Psychic-type Pokémon that had been his companion for almost his entire life had taken place on Nick's shoulder. Even though Ralts had seen this area a dozen times before, his trainer's joy and awe seemed to be contagious.
Step by step Nick and Ralts came closer to the biggest city in Johto, Goldenrod City. That town had everything one needed - a big mall, the radio tower, a gym...
The latter of them would become a destination for them someday, but considering the fact that Ralts hardly had been trained and Nick had no experience as a Pokémon trainer, challenging a gym that quickly didn't sound like a good idea.

Well, someday.

On his way Nick stopped several times to look at the scenery. A few trainers fought quick battles at the side of the road, a group of wild Pokémon flited through the tall grass, and also the little river flowing along the way was filled with life.
Nick often had been thinking about all the Pokémon he might meet on his journey, and thinking about them had made him unsure if he wanted to try and catch as many Pokémon as he could or wait for the opportunity to catch special Pokémon he liked. Choices, choices...

After a while they reached the gate of Goldenrod City.
"Well, here we are, Psycho. I guess you remember Goldenrod City?", Nick asked ironically. His partner Pokémon only replied by nudging his head against Nick's cheek.
"Yeah, I know, I know, you've even seen this town more often than I have", he added and laughed shortly. Psycho rolled his eyes but kept a smile on his face.
"I think we should stay here for the night and start training tomorrow. Does that sound good to you, partner?"
Sometimes Nick wished that Psycho could say more than just his name, even though he had gotten to know the various meanings of "Ralts!" over time...
