Subject: Article on Anime Mon Mar 31, 2014 6:28 pm
Hi! My father loves to write articles about different subjects. He's not an anime lover and the only anime he has ever watched was Voltes V, it's an old anime about alien invaders from space attacking Earth and the protagonists are five teenagers who pilot a battle robot. The two of us used to watch that anime when I was a kid, good memories.
This time, he wants to write about anime but doesn't know where to start and about what should he write. I am not a fan of anime either because I prefer movies. I just wanted to get your opinion for my father.
What do you think would be a good write about anime?
Thank you very much!

I don't know, but he does need to decide an angle and go from there. But I've watched plenty of different anime, from Gundam Wing to Excel Saga and Pretear, to Yuugioh and AKB0048 - both dubbed, subbed and delving into manga whether the same or alternative paths. So if he needs a source, I'm up for it! And as a journalist, I can appreciate the writing of an article, so.

I appreciate your time and suggestions but it is not what I was talking about. I'm not asking for what anime to watch, I'm asking what to write about. Should it be a summarized history of anime? Should it be how anime made such a great impact on young ones like us? Those kinds of things.

I'd write about the history of anime, beginning with Astro Boy, while it's not the first, it is one of the oldest and well known, and influenced anime and even Disney. Though anime also got a lot of influence from Disney as well. Which is why in most anime characters are depicted with large eyes and rare hair colors usually not found in places like Japan. Osamu Tezuka also created Kimba the White Lion, which many believed to have influenced several scenes in The Lion King. Or you could write about how it influences many people today, how they go to conventions and will dress up as characters similar to what goes on at Comic-con. But I'd go with the history of it. Like maybe how Spirited Away was the first Animated movies from another country to win an Academy award before it was even dubbed in English. Or how Akira helped bring anime over to other countries. Or that it really isn't that big in Japan, because most anime produced today is targeted at one audience; Otaku, which roughly translates to nerd, though lately it's been used to refer to people as much worse than a nerd.

Don't forget cowboy beep bop. It is regarded as the anime that brung the culture to the states and the whole western world people say with out it anime wouldn't be as popular as it is today if wasn't for Cowboy Beepbop.
*Cowboy Bebop Sorry I'm kinda a freak when it comes to spelling. But yeah, Cowboy Bebop was the first anime to air on Adult Swim, this helped bring about the usual anime that airs every Saturday night. Anime has influenced multiple series' art and design, notably Avatar the Last Airbender and Teen Titans, which focused more on the Super Deformed art style (chibi)

Thank you very much for your help, Asuka! My father was able to write five articles based on your suggestion! As much as I'd like to link you to the website itself where he posted the following articles, I'm afraid I can't do so as my very own personal information is in his profile in that website. I could only copy-paste! Once again, father says thanks!
Remembering Voltes V:
Remember Voltes V? This is a Japanese anime television series that was first aired on TV Asahi on April 6, 1977. It was created by Tadao Nagahama as the second part of his Robot Romance Trilogy, of the Super Robot genre.
When conceived as a second part/remake of its predecessor Combattler V, was released in Italy, Spain, and The Philippines, dubbed in their respective languages except initially in the Philippines, where the first airing, in 1978, was dubbed in English.
The Voltes Team tells of the story of the disappearance of Dr. Gō. Then the Earth International Defense Force trained five young people to be highly skilled Earth Defense Agents. Dedicated fighters and resolute, these agents act as both special commando units and pilots of the Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V against the invading Boazanians.
• Ken'ichi Gō (Steve Armstrong) is the Voltes V team leader and is known for his marksman, a Motocross champion, an ace pilot, and the eldest of the three Gō brothers. As a child, he was so adventurous but the disappearance of his father changed him and became more responsible and caring for his younger brothers as well as for the people.
• Daijirō Gō ("Big Bert" Armstrong) is the defense tactician and was once a playful child but Daijirō's outlook in life suddenly changed when his father disappeared. Alarmed by his personality change, Mrs. Gō sent him to a country where a martial arts master taught him different fighting styles and forms of meditation. When he rejoined his brothers, Daijirō was already a master of different hand-to-hand fighting styles. Along with Ken'ichi, Daijirō started training as a member of the Voltes V Team.
• Hiyoshi Gō ("Little John" Armstrong) is a genius in inventing automatons and has always been interested in learning mechanics, robotics, and electromagnetism at a very young age. Once, he even created a funny little octopus-robot called Tako-chan ("Octo-One" in the dubbed version). To his big brothers, Ken'ichi and Daijirō, Hiyoshi he will always be a little brother, a child who never felt the warmth and love of a real father. He also excels in diving and swimming and because of his exceptional talents; Hiyoshi was asked to join the Voltes V Team as a technical handyman, specifically for repairs during field operations (battle).
• Ippei Mine (Mark Gordon) is a rodeo champion but an orphaned young boy as his mother died while trying to save him from a pack of wolves. He then learned how to live in the streets and perform odd jobs that strengthened his personality. One day, the Earth International Defense Force asked Ippei to join the team. He initially refused so the team had to take him in forcibly.
• Megumi Oka (Jamie Robinson) is a kunoichi (female ninja) and the 18th heir of the Kōga-ryū ninja. A beautiful, slim, and young Megumi received special training during her childhood and by age of 13; she already possessed extraordinary skills and lightning reflexes. In joining the Voltes V Team, she was the voice of reason among the male members, especially whenever Ken'ichi and Ippei were about to clash during personal conflicts. With her cool demeanor and uncanny skills, Megumi qualified as the fifth (and only female) member of the Voltes V team.
Astroboy:
Astro Boy, known in Japan by its original name Tetsuwan Atomu (meaning "Mighty Atom"), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka from 1952 to 1968. It was first shown on Japanese TV in 1963 with its original series which ran for three years and was considered the first series to embody the aesthetic that later became known as anime.
Atom is the real name of Astro Boy, a powerful boy robot created by Doctor Tenma, the head of the Ministry of Science. He conceived the idea of creating Atom when his son Tobio died in a car accident. Dr. Tenma built Atom to resemble Tobio physically and in fact treated him as if he was his own son.
Dr. Tenma however realized that Atom could not fill the void left over from the loss of his son since Atom could not grow or appreciate human qualities in the same way as a real child. So Dr. Tenma rejected Atom, who then ran away and involved himself over to a cruel circus owner named Hamegg who is known for using androids in his show for the amusement of others and was very abusive of them most of the time.
Atom, after suffering in Hamegg's circus for an extended period he met Professor Ochanomizu, the new head of the Ministry of Science. Ochanomizu managed to make Hamegg turn the android over to him and became Atom's legal guardian. Ochanomizu soon realized that Atom was gifted with great powers, and that remarkably he was also able to experience human emotions (just like the fictional character Pinocchio).
With Professor Ochanomizu's guidance, Atom used his powers to fight injustice and crime, such as prejudice since most of his enemies were robot-hating humans until he became known as Astro Boy, the world's greatest superhero and went on to fight everything from robots gone mad to alien invaders (in which Pinocchio did not do).
Kimba:
Titled in English as Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Emperor), an anime series from the 1960s; created by Osamu Tezuka and based on his manga of the same title which began publication in 1950.
This was the very first animated television series created in Japan in color. Manga was first published in a serialized form in Manga Shōnen magazine. Kimba was produced by Mushi Production while on the latter part series was produced by Tezuka Productions.
Kimba anime series has enjoyed popularity worldwide — including countries like Europe, Australia, Middle East, and the United States. It was translated into several languages such as Dutch, German, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French, and many more.
On September 5, 2009 a TV special was premiered on Fuji TV directed by Gorō Taniguchi, written by noted novelist and drama writer Osamu Suzuki, and featuring character designs from noted illustrator Yoshitaka Amano. It was made to commemorate Fuji TV's 50th anniversary.
Why People Prefer Anime Over Other Forms of Cartoons:
Based on studies and research, there are many reasons as to why a lot of Japanese and even Asian teenagers are hooked to anime movies.
Diversion Many Asian not just Japanese teenagers in particular are struggling with both academic and peer pressures, dissatisfaction, conformity to life -- watching anime programs and all its romantic fantasy themes lets them temporarily divert their present situations plus it also gives them the chance to find themselves and discover what they want to do with their lives in the future.
Fantastic Arts The artwork put into anime movies is amazing – the perfect blending of the design of their costumes, hair, and color as well as their fast movements reflects an unparalleled talent for making animated shows. If one would just look at images of these fictional characters, one can already tell how intricately drawn and designed these anime are. Isn’t it lovely?
Extraordinary Plot All over the world many of us have been exposed to stories and movies that always portray the triumph and success of the protagonist over the antagonist. In anime movies this is not always the story.
How has Anime Influenced the Lifestyle of People?:
Maybe because of the immense love and appreciation of people in many other cultures around the world it can be said that their lifestyles have also been influenced greatly by anime movies.
Way of Dressing If you go to Japan, in the area around Harajuku station, you will find Harajuku girls who are fashion-conscious and who like to dress up like their favorite anime characters. There are even competitions for costume plays or ‘cosplays’ among individuals who try to look like their favorite characters.
Remembering an Old Sport By the time anime was born, the traditional board game Go in Japan was no longer played but when the anime Hikaru came out -- Go became popular once more, children and adults alike began to play it again.
Clothing Designs Influenced by the many young Japanese girls and boys in ‘cosplay’, the current fashion designs of clothes in Japan now includes anime-inspired pieces and have reached many other countries whose people are also hooked to anime.
