Sandshrew missed, but landed just on the edge of the pond. His toes sank into the softened soil around it, eyes widening. He flailed his arms a bit, staggering back and plopping on his rear. He was panting hard, heart racing as he looked to the Mew. It was over the pond now, causing Sandshrew to growl a little. How could he get to that pink nuissance without toughing the damaging waters?!

Burton was a bit disappointed since his plan hadn't worked quite as he'd expected, but it had by no means failed. He just had to figure out what to do next.... Mew erupted out of the water at that moment, sending droplets of water everywhere, and Burton had a new idea.
"Mew, use Pound on the water," shouted Burton. Mew nodded, and gave a "Meeeeewwwww!" as he shot toward the water's surface. He was moving at a bit of an angle, so that as well as going toward the water, he was also moving slightly in the direction of Sandshrew. At the last second, Mew flipped over and his tail hit the water, splashing a multitude of droplets all over the place. Burton only hoped it wouldn't work like the move Splash...

"Shrew?" Sandshrew questioned, eyes widening as it was splashed, getting covered in the cold wet substance. "Shrew!! Sandshrew!" the creature cried, running around in circles. He curled into a ball {Defense Curl}, rolling around in the grass to dry himself off. He stepped back away from the water and its "Splash Zone" Hoping to lead Mew out to where he could do damage again. He had clearly been weakened by the water, perhaps evening out the odds well enough now.

"Yes! Mew, you've 'softened' it, I guess," said Burton jubilantly. Mew squeaked happily and determinedly chased the Sandshrew into the grass. Without needing instruction, he flipped over yet again with his tail outstretched. Burton crossed his fingers. If his plan hadn't worked, his last chance may have passed.

Sandshrew felt the painful slam of Mew's tail into his back. The poor creature was softened from the water, making the move sting that much more. He fell down, struggling in attempt to push himself to stand one last time. He reared his claws, and knowing this was probably his last chance dove after Mew with Scratch!

The attack landed powerfully, raking down across Mew's entire stomach and some of his foot. It sent Mew spinning toward the ground, but he regained control and flew shakily back up into the air. Burton knew that Mew was getting rather dangerously low on health, but the scales looked like they'd tipped.
"Alright, Mew, you know what to do," he said softly. Mew nodded and began the descent toward Sandshrew. He was sensing the imminent end of the battle just like Burton was, and poured everything he had into the flipping motion of Pound he had grown sick of.

The fatality of Mew's attack was imminent. Both parties were wearing down, but Mew's Pound was finally the battle ending strike. Mew's tail slammed into the side of Sandshrew's face with great force. Sandshrew's head turned, and then his body followed, twisting before landing on the ground with a thud. Sandshrew down and out, quite possibly for a good amount of time, too.

Congratulations! Mew gained 5 experience! Mew is now Level 6!

With Sandshrew out of the way, Burton could finally move on with his journey!

But unfortunately, life moved on and left Burton behind. He no longer found the time time or the draw to return to his journey, and it was left hanging by a thread. Mew leveled up, but the excitement was unheard in an empty universe. Sorrow clung to Burton as he knelt down and pressed the button on Charmeleon's Poke Ball one last time, just to look at her, be with her. She understood, softly wrapping her arms around him. He hugged her back, imagining a future where they could happily continue their travels but knowing deep in his heart that it was probably not to be.
"Thank you, friend. You were the mystery I could not solve. The mystery of an attachment to something that was entirely fabricated, but something that felt so real to me...." Tears welled up in his eyes as he unwrapped his arms from his dear friend, the one that he had always been able to come back to in the years prior, in the times of emptiness, loneliness, or unbearable sadness. Burton could finally move on with his journey, but he knew he could never truly move on with his journey. He could not bear to hold on to Charmeleon anymore.
Burton let go.
