A body lay on the ground, pale-faced and quite dead. The area was bustling with activity: Cops, medical examiners and distraught family members were all there for various reasons. Inspector Jordan Mark stepped up to the body and bent over to inspect it.
“What have we here?” he asked his partner, Paul Brown. Paul had arrived at the scene first and was scribbling on a pad of lined paper.
“His name is Brad Maxell. His wife called in, sobbing, saying that he'd tried to kill himself.” Jordan continued scrutinizing the corpse but indicated that Paul should continue.
“She said that he'd been downcast for the past couple of weeks but she didn't know why. Apparently, at about seven o'clock this morning, Brad woke up and started getting ready for the day. She was already awake-”
“Hang on, Paul,” interrupted Jordan, “what's her name?”
“Julie,” responded Paul. Jordan nodded. Paul continued, “Julie was already awake and she was in the kitchen, making eggs. Brad came in looking absolutely miserable. He stared at the frying pan she was using for her eggs a moment, then grabbed it and smacked himself in the head with it as hard as possible. He wavered a bit and said, 'I'm having an affair,' and collapsed moments later. He died soon after.”
Jordan put some of the yellow egg on the floor in a plastic evidence bag.
“Well, let's get her down to the station for questioning,” he said.
“What? Why?” asked Paul, sounding less surprised than he looked.
“This wasn't suicide,” answered Jordan, “it was murder.”
