School had just ended. Kiyomi sat in the advisor's office. The advisor, Ms. Nori, said, "Kiyomi, you'll be a senior next year. It's definitely time to start giving some thought to what college you'll be attending if you haven't already. Now, I know your mother is an alumna of MKU in Saffron and your father an alumnus of Stanford in America. Both of them have, of course, been very successful as a result. Your mother is one of the best pokemon veterinarians in Johto and your father is an excellent lawyer. You've shown superb determination thus far, so I think you should consider following in their footsteps. Perhaps, Middle Kanton University interests you."

Kiyomi zoned out during all this boring discussion about college. She had lost her drive for education lately. She had originally wanted to be an English teacher, and granted, English was still a passion of hers, but something was more important to her now. Due to her last few months with Vulpix, she had been seriously considering being a pokemon trainer. The only issue was that she knew her parents would not be too thrilled about it. Even still, she was positive that this was her real calling. She had even decided, that when she grew old, she would write a book about her experiences as a trainer.

After the meeting with Ms. Nori, Kiyomi walked home, which was no different from any other day. She deplored the bus because that was where the bullies once harassed her. Along Kiyomi's journey home through the streets of Goldenrod, she stopped to release Vulpix (lv. 5). As was her usual technique, she tossed the pokeball as gamblers would for snake-eyes. Vulpix appeared. She yawned and stretched. Kiyomi smiled and said, "C'mon, Dice, walk me home."

Kiyomi and Dice walked along the eastern outskirts of Goldenrod headed home. Kiyomi's house was in the northeastern part of town. Gradually and imperceptibly, the sky became overcast as they walked along. Eventually, Kiyomi reached her house.

"Hello, Kiyomi," her mother said as she entered. "How was school? Your principle called to inform us that you would meet with your advisor today to talk about college. I'm so excited. I was thinking you might feel obligated to attend either your father's or my Alma Mater. Don't worry. We just want to see you setting the bar high; do that and we're fine with wherever you choose to go."

"I'm glad you feel that way," Kiyomi said dolefully. "On my way home, I decided where I want to go."
"Really?"
"Yes. I want to journey the world as a pokemon trainer."
"W-what? I don't understand."
"Mother, I'm sixteen. Kids my age are already starting their own journeys to..."
Her mother cut her off saying, "Do you really think your father and I are going to support you traversing the planet in search of strong pokemon at the risk of your own life."
"Mom, I..."
"What in the world is glamorous about that lifestyle to you? It's hard work that rarely ever pays off! Don't you understand? Statistically, odds are you will die out there without us ever hearing a word of it. Out there in the wild with pokemon that could easily kill you!"
"I was only hoping that I wouldn't have to leave this way, but I'm leaving regardless."
"Oh, you're not leaving. Your father will be sure to talk some sense into you when he gets home."

Kiyomi walked upstairs to her room with tears streaming down her face. As she'd anticipated, she failed to stand up to her mother the way she wanted. However, her determination had not wavered, nor had her plans changed. She sat on her bed and looked at Dice. She could feel Dice's anger. It was as though Dice was insulted on Kiyomi's behalf. Then, Dice climbed to the window sill and opened the window. She made a soft noise to get Kiyomi's attention. Kiyomi looked at her again and saw Dice motion with her head toward the outdoors. Kiyomi nodded and reached under her bed. She pulled out a backpack that was already packed. It was the backpack she used to carry last year before her mother bought her a new one. This old backpack was pre-packed with her traveling materials for the time when this day would finally arrive.

Kiyomi and Dice came walking down the stairs to the front door. Kiyomi walked out the front door and closed it behind her; she knew her mother would come to investigate. The rain had come. Sure enough, after Kiyomi was several paces away from the front porch, she heard her mother's voice yealling, "Kiyomi, no, please!"
"Goodbye, mother," she said. "I'll miss you. I love you."

Kiyomi headed south and walked awhile. Eventually, she neared the southern gate that led out of Goldenrod. She had heard before that there were plenty of trainers and wild pokemon on the route ahead. All she needed to do was battle a wild one as a way of testing the waters. She and Dice headed to Route 34 (or whatever it was).

On Route 34, Kiyomi walked aimlessly through the rain. As she wandered, she suddenly heard a voice behind her warning her just as she encountered a wild _________ !

The Flaafy startled Kiyomi in the rain almost to the point of slipping and falling. She was scared. It was really her first legitimate pokemon battle. Suddenly, the fear began to overwhelm her as the soft, docile Flaafy began to snarl and assume a pouncing stance like that of a wolf. She turned to run away so as to escape this dangerous situation when she caught a glimpse of hindsight. She remembered what had incited her to become a pokemon trainer in the first place. She remembered the fearless girl from school who had a pokemon and stood up to anyone. She remembered why she couldn't run home to her parents. She looked back at the vicious Flaafy that hadn't moved a muscle so far. She gathered her courage and threw a pokeball high into the air. The pokeball came down and released Vulpix. Immediately, she said, "Dice, use your Ember attack against that Flaafy!" Three small fireballs in a clump were launched from Vulpix's mouth at the Flaafy.

((OOC: Lol I didn't see it until after posting this one))

Vulpix was barely quick enough to dodge the thundershock. Unfortunately, Kiyomi could tell that Vulpix wouldn't last much longer. Dice isn't used to battle, Kiyomi thought. She gets tired too quickly to fight a full battle. It took a lot of energy and concentration just to dodge that attack. Since Vulpix was so tired already, she failed to muster the energy to attack before the Flaafy did.

Flaafy's tackle knocked Dice to the ground hard. Kiyomi gasped and asked, "Dice, are you okay?!" Slowly, Dice stood to her feet. She had little strength left, and Kiyomi didn't think she could fight anymore. For Dice's safety, Kiyomi pulled out the pokeball and said, "Dice, return!" However, Vulpix refused. Her small, black eyes were filled with determination. She didn't want to give up, so perhaps foolishly, she launched another Ember attack at Flaafy.

This time, the thundershock was far too much for Vulpix to handle. Kiyomi screamed, "Dice!" as Vulpix's body skidded through the mud. Raindrops continued to fall on Vulpix, and sparks continued to discharge from her fur. Kiyomi ran to Vulpix to pick her up. She knelt in the mud with Vulpix as she gently lifted the unconscious, paralyzed pokemon into her arms. She said, "Dice, I'm so sorry. Please, forgive me."

After a moment, Kiyomi carried Vulpix as she walked slowly through the rain back toward the city. It was already a dark evening; time had passed quickly during battle. Kiyomi held back the tears and began to walk faster as she focused on reaching a pokemon center.

Back in Goldenrod City, Kiyomi sat in the pokemon center. She was still hopeful that Vulpix would be okay. Regardless, Kiyomi was inspired by Vulpix's will to go on. The determination Vulpix had shown. Even though Vulpix had lost against Flaafy, she had lost with dignity. She'd fought a good fight.

Kiyomi began thinking of ways to become a better trainer. She had to become as strong a trainer as Vulpix was as a pokemon. Here, a strong pokemon took orders from a weak trainer. She needed to know how to be a better trainer in general.

((OOC: and don't call me idiot, IDIOT))

Her eyes fixed on the man before her, Kiyomi nodded saying, "Thank you," as she took the pokeball back from Nurse Joy. She eventually stood and replied to the man saying, "I'm not a very good trainer. In fact, that was my first time being in a real battle."

((OOC: Obviously this double post is due to the fact that Dark Phoenix has yet to post. Just advancing the story in case he forgot.))

Kiyomi took the man's silence as an opportunity to expound. "I've just left my parents' house, and I can't go back. Not until I've at least found some success as a pokemon trainer. Until then, I can't face them. And in all that rain, I didn't want to give up, but I knew Vulpix couldn't handle anymore."
