Personality: He is quite lazy and spends a lot of his time sleeping, which he does so much that Roland is able to fall into a deep sleep in a matter of seconds. Likewise, he is not affected from being woken up via head slam, reacting calmly when such an incident occurs. In contrast to this casual nature of his, Roland has been said to be the most violent-tempered trainer around. He tries to uphold a genuine relationship with his pokemon but tends to be quite and distant to them since he can't help thinking of that one mistake he made.

History: Roland grew up in the far end of the Dewdrop Valley. He lived in a small house house together with his parents and the many pokemon that lived there. You see: A couple of pokemon had arrived in the past and where allowed to stay with them after a lot of quabbling. They lived quite happily and Roland always had a friend to play with.

Though one day: An awful lot of Ghost and Dark types would appear which scared the young Roland. They would often come at night while he was asleep to try and approach him but they always disappeared when he noticed. He didn't understand what they wanted. One day the pokemon scared him so much that he ran out of the house. They chased him to the deepest part of the valley.

The pokemon kept chasing him until they finally caught up to him. Then his Growlithe appeared and started fight the evil pokemon. Roland's Growlithe was gravely injured and Roland couldn't help but cry as the pokemon kept hurting it. He eventually lost control and was cloaked in a dark aura. The shadow crept across the ground and grabbed the evil pokemon as well as his own Growilthe. He lost consiousness and awoke to a huge mass of non moving pokemon. Roland got scared of what had transpired and ran. He just kept running and running.

He eventually found himself in a small town where the people were kind enough to take him in. He started to live in Rosemary Town and lived quite normally. He didn't dare to return home or go near pokemon until he could control this strange power of his. As he kept mastering his ability more and more Dark and Ghost types appeared around him. He assumed they were somehow attracted to it. So he got himself used to them and improved his bond with the darker types. He finally mastered his power at the age of 22 and decided to take of on that long awaited journey.
