PostSubject: Dungeons and Dragons - General Reactions   Dungeons and Dragons - General Reactions H6Q0F8zTue Aug 27, 2013 11:29 pm

I'm an avid D&D player, SlipperyFish can tell you how much I get into the game sometimes. I've never done a group over a forum like this, but I'd be more than happy to try if I could get 4-5 people who were interested in playing. We'd be using old-school rules, where the four main classes are Fighter, Wizard, Thief, and Cleric, with a few subclasses like Paladin. I also have access to an extra set of rulebooks online that allows me to help you customize your characters better to the way you would want (In the fighter book, for example, it has a subsection devoted to Gladiators, and another to Samurai/Ronin, along with a half-dozen more). I'm not expecting many people to be even remotely interested, since it can be a bit... strenuous to create a character, but I know my way around the process and will try to make it as painless as possible. :P

Honestly, if you're not sure whether you'd want to try it, I'd say at least give it a shot. It may not be as entertaining over forums, but I expect it to still be pretty fun. Once I get a few interested people, I'll put down a simplified template and the full selection of classes, along with the links to the extra books to add different themes/flavours to your characters.

Hell why not I tried to get some of my friends to play it but none of they would. but I know different dungeon masters answer this question differently, if in our characters history if they were a different class then changed to what they are playing as but gained a cetain skill in their history would they still be able to use that skill?

Four already? Schweet. It depends on what you want to do, Ian. Thieves are usually skirmishers, using short swords/daggers in melee or bows/crossbows. They also have some pretty sweet skills, as far as picking locks, hiding in shadows, and climbing walls without ropes (the only characters able to do so). Wizards sit to the back, casting spells with sometimes absurd effects (Color Spray comes to mind). Fighters/Warriors (depends on the edition of the game as to what name they get) are usually big, beefy dudes with a huge weapon and heavy armor, although I've seen some really cool stuff in the extra book that lets you be anything from a Samurai to a Musketeer. Clerics are the oddball, they use the powers granted to them by their god, whether it's the god of war and strife or a god of light and healing. Most clerics can heal to at least some extent, although I had a cleric who could beat our Fighter in a duel. Paladins are an interesting (and extremely over-powered) mix of Fighter and Cleric, but they have a major drawback. If you ever willingly commit an evil act, you lose all of your cool Pally powers and are a normal fighter until you go on an extremely difficult quest for penance. Rangers are the mix of Thieves and Fighters, usually either being extremely vicious two-weapon fighters or expert bowmen (Elves are pretty famous as the Ranger archetype). I'm gonna link the extra books over to Mark and Cyrus, so you guys can skim through them and see if there's anything that catches your eye. Alpha, there's a separate way that skills are determined in the edition we're going to use, but it's so unbelievably complex and redundant that I'm going to have you guys write up backgrounds, then assign you some skills based on it. So, in less words: yes.

Hahaha, Thief-heavy party, this should be fun. We'll be having mostly out-of-combat scenarios, then, unless we get a Fighter or Melee Ranger (A cleric under the right god could work, too). Otherwise you guys'll just be too frail and breakable for lots of combat.

To an extent. You can't be a fighter with the ability to cast spells, but if you can make a case for your Ranger being an expert at setting snares for hunting, I'd give him the skill to find and remove traps, which is usually only for Thieves. If it's close to what your character class can normally do, I'm not gonna say, "No, that's only available to this class".

I... yeah, whatever. I'll make you a gnome illusionist, they're pretty trollsy and making it look like he summons star-nosed moles wouldn't be uncommon. Gnomes as a whole are ridiculous, I told you about gringle gramfoodle, right? The gnome thief who had an obsession with "shinies" and specialized in lock-picking, with professional pride in knowing everything about every lock ever? Best character to RP, lemme tell ya. "Gringle found a shiny!" "Uh, where did you find it?" "In a poorly locked safe." "Gringle, that's stealing..." "Nu-uh, Gringle found it, and no one told him not to take it." Anyway... gnome illusionist sound good? Pointy green hat included, of course.

At this point, I don't care what color it is. Okay, we have a reworked Pally with Alpha, two thieves (one damage oriented, the other has yet to be decided I think), ad an illusionist. Ian, that basically means you can do anything but be a thief, unless you really want to, then I can try to keep things less combat-oriented.

Ok, to allow us more Confrontation i'll be a Ranger Class. I want to be a Male Cat Person with a Dissociative Identity Disorder (Split Personality: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Dissociative_Identity_Disorder_(3.5e_Trait) ) :)

The first side of Razzle is going to be a calm cool-headed guy who will think things through before attacking, and strike only when the moment is right. He will be friendly and helpful whenever he can be and is comfortable leading or following.

The second side of Razzle is going to be somewhat insane; Gets into fights with flowers, tree, cows, rabbits and such. If he ever meets a dragon the chances are he's going to try and get it as, a pet and wrap pretty ribbons around it's neck whilst, giving it cups of herbal tea. :DHe will be unreasonable and usually hard to control but, when treated in the right manner he will be harmless.

The changes between character will be completely random 90% of the time but, the other 10% is when he's conflicted in a decision and absolutely cannot make his mind up. The Dungeon Master can decide when he changes with a roll of the dice.

They both love Pastries as, a common love. In fact you could say both are obsessed about pastries and will drop whatever they're doing if they see one. Mainly Cherry Bakewells (lol).

History for Razzle:
He grew up living in a log cabin in the forest with his parents and a brother but, unfortunately they all left when his Dissociative Identity Disorder kicked in or to be precise when he sellotaped a rabbit to a stag and began chasing it around yelling out "EXCELSIOR". After a few years of training in solitude he discovered he had an adept skill of handling a crossbow and regular bow although, both have safety devices to prevent his alternate self from hurting someone with it.

Following this he moved to a large kingdom, moving into a cobblestone house and owning a bakery although, this never really picked up much, due to the fact his dough kept mysteriously getting Lego houses in it. Due to this he decided that he must go on a journey so, he could at least lend his skills to something helpful instead of unknowingly being the kingdom nuisance.

Basic Looks:
Razzle is 5ft 11in and has a black and white striped color scheme. Though like most cat's these aren't full stripes they are jagged and cut out randomly. He has a regular sized head but, he has long arms though, not freakishly long. Will get the armor when our game starts.

(Is this good so, far then Sax?)

As far as I know, the edition I was planning on running doesn't have rules for that. However, since Mark brought 3.5 into play... I'll look into it.

I'm assigning a bit of homework if you're new to D&D or pen-and-paper RPG's as a whole.
Skim through the Core Rules on this site. I'm not saying it's the only way we'll play, but it's a good start.

http://www.d20srd.org/

I'm going to be simplifying the character sheets and handling most of the numbers for this, since it's the first time for a lot of you, but look through the classes and their basic descriptions and see if there's anything that jumps out at you. Prestige classes, too, you never know what you might want to do later on down the road. Cyrus specifically, you're going to want to be a rogue and work your way up to assassin in this edition; I can help you set your rogue up to make him play similar to an assassin/ninja from the beginning, though. He will NOT have certain skill requirements, I'm going to set a level requirement that matches the others a bit more closely. Some of these rules are so stupid... It's like they were designed to give the DM a headache -_-"

Seriously, I skimmed through sections but, it's too long to read it all... And I picked a Catfolk because, it would be fun and different to others plus, who doesn't want to see an Insane Catfolk lol. Also, it seemed fitting for a ranger. What Edition were you planning on running though, I did like, certain aspects I saw in 3.5 though.

I had intended 2e, which is both simpler and more complex (the rules can be watered down more easily for new people, and don't all have numbers, but that makes it really hard sometimes when you try to go by the full ruleset). 3.5 is fairly quick to pick up on, and while it does have oodles of numbers, it won't be that bad for you guys (since I'm handling most of them this time :P). And I know there's a crapload, which is why I said "skim though some sections". I don't even think I've read a single rulebook front to back, ever. They're just too... overcomplicated. "Strength is for melee combat, lifting things, and all of the things you would expect strength to deal with, like kicking down doors." That's all they needed to say, instead of three paragraphs of what Strength does.

Yupp. The main points i've taken though from 3.5 are the Dissociative Identity Disorder and Catfolk class. Mainly because, I figured crazy cat people with an obsession over pastries would be a fun thing to play as, though he'd also, be a willing companion to go questing with lol.
