After leaving the Violet City gym, Jenny walked through the streets with her Eevee, Paprika, on her shoulders, following another Trainer who she'd come to trust.

The Trainer in question, a girl with an icy demeanor and snow-white hair, was leading them back to the Pokemon Center. Rei was her name, and she'd just finished a tough battle against the gym leader, Falkner. It was after witnessing this girl challenge Falkner that Jenny realized she wasn't ready to fight for her first gym badge, and Rei was kind enough to offer her assistance in helping Jenny train her only Pokemon.

"Kind" was an odd word to use to describe Rei, Jenny thought. The other Trainer was usually cold and distant, and Jennifer was unsure whether it was simply happiness from her recent victory that led her to be so helpful, or if Rei really was that thoughtful. Either way, Jenny was very happy to have a hand in training Paprika, especially when the help was coming from such a strong Trainer.

They reached the Pokemon Center before long, and Rei marched right up to the counter to have her Pokemon healed. They deserved a good rest after that battle, but yet Rei was willing to put them through more training in order to help Jenny. Perhaps the girl really was that thoughtful?

While Rei was getting her Pokemon taken care of, Jenny took notice of all of the video-phones lined up against the wall. She was in no mood to talk to her family at the moment, but she didn't see the harm in writing them a little email. She walked over to the nearby PC and quickly typed out a message, letting her parents know how she was doing.

The moment she hit the "send" button she sensed a presence behind her. Jenny whirled around to find Rei standing by, waiting for her. Jenny smiled nervously and logged out, letting the PC shut down.

The two Trainers then proceeded towards Sprout Tower, the tall structure standing at the back of town. Jenny gazed up at it in slight awe, only snapping out of her daydreams when Paprika yipped lightly.

"Look, Rika. That's Sprout Tower! Legends say the pillar in the middle of the tower used to be a giant Bellsprout. Isn't that interesting?" she said in amazement.

Paprika didn't seem too interested, though. The Eevee simply let out another bark to remind her master to keep up with Rei, who was leading them into the tower now.

Rei led Jenny up into Sprout Tower, onto a rather deserted level. It was where she had trained before her battle with Falkner, so she thought it would suit well for the training between Sneasel and Paprika as well. Of course, Rei would have to remind Sneasel to take it easy. Still, he would be sure to train the pup hard.

When they finally stepped off the stairs, Rei walked a bit into the room and stopped. She closed her eyes for a moment, enjoying the gentle sway of the building. It was caused by the many battles going on, and Rei thought it was glorious. Pokémon so determined to prove themselves, all over the place. Soon, she would find another Pokémon worthy of joining her team. But for now, she had other priorities.

Her eyes flickered open once more. She could feel Jenny's presence behind her. "Are you ready then?" she asked, Sneasel standing beside her, yet facing toward Jenny rather than away. "If so, then we can begin. It will be good practice for both of them, but do remember this is only training, not a true battle. If Paprika grows tired, we will stop." Rei explained, and with that Sneasel sharpened his claws, taking a battle stance in preparation for Eevee. "Have her try to hit him, he can be rather evasive, and it will help Rika's speed."

Upon entering the tower, Jenny instantly began to feel uneasy. She could feel the building swaying side to side gently, and though it was easy for one to maintain balance, it simply frightened her. It only got worse as they headed up to another floor, the structure moving more and more.

Paprika seemed to enjoy it, however, as she hopped around on the floor and moved with the motion of the tower.

Jennifer stood with her feet spread apart as though it would help keep her from toppling over, despite the fact that the swaying wasn't enough to cause her to fall. It was all nerves, of course. When Rei mentioned that they would begin Training now, Jenny did her best to stand up straight and focus on the task at hand.

"Okay Rika," She looked down to her Eevee. "Time to get serious. See if you can hit Sneasel with a bit of a Tackle, alright?"

Paprika paused for a moment and gazed up at her Trainer, a bit confused by what she was just told. Jenny's heart sank a bit as she quickly realized the problem... Rika had never battled another Trainer's Pokemon before. The Eevee obviously didn't want to harm Sneasel, seeing as though she considered Rei to be a friend, but Jenny knew she would have to get over it sooner or later.

Taking a deep breath, Jennifer spoke in as firm a tone as she could manage. "Paprika, try to hit Sneasel. We have to do this if we're going to make our way through the Pokemon League, alright? Now go, and do your best!"

Rika's ears fell a bit, but she wasn't going to upset her Trainer. She gave a determined bark and set her sights on the Dark type Pokemon. After kicking her feet back a few times to find her footing, the Eevee charged forward, dashing towards Sneasel in an attempt to Tackle him.

Sneasel was quick, jumping to the side and lightly tapping Rika on her head with his claw. If she wanted to hit him, she couldn't hold back. Rei watched from the corned of her eyes, turned at an angle that seemed to be almost facing away from the battle.

"Rika, don't hold back. Sneasel can handle it," Rei ordered, hoping her giving permission would let the Eevee train harder. She would of course reinforce Sneasel's defense with small bits of ice as he might take hits, similar to what she did with her own body during training sessions. "Try again. This time watch out for a counter attack," Rei said. Sneasel understood, taking his battle stance once more.

Paprika didn't expect Sneasel to be so fast. It was as though she thought he'd stand perfectly still for her while she just tackled him, but this clearly was not the case, as she realized. The Eevee looked towards Rei when the Trainer told her not to hold back, and there was a hint of hurt and confusion in the Pokemon's eyes. She didn't seem to care whether or not Sneasel could handle her silly Tackle attacks, she just didn't want to hit him.

"Come on, Rika!" Jenny said, clenching her fists. "You've got to learn to face the foe. Try it again like Rei said!"

The Eevee gazed back at her Trainer and gave another yip in response. She then looked at Sneasel once more, lowering the front of her body and preparing to leap towards him. After taking careful aim, Paprika sprang forward like a tightly wound up spring, hoping to hit the Dark type this time.

Sneasel quickly spun to the side, though this time he could feel the breeze from Paprika's attack. She'd almost got him that time! Again, Sneasel lightly tapped Rika on the head before jumping back. It was as if to say "No dice, try again".

Rei slightly adjusted her stance as the battle moved, making sure she could keep an eye on it at all times. The Eevee would surely gain more speed the more she tried. She watched as Sneasel took a stance, then rushed at Eevee with a restrained counter attack, Scratch.

The little Eevee was so sure she'd hit Sneasel this time, she was a bit startled when he'd practically vanished from one spot and seemingly reappeared in another. While she stood still, trying to figure out what had happened, she felt a light tap on her head. Paprika jumped in surprise, whirling around and taking a defensive stance as she spotted Sneasel.

It seemed he was preparing to attack now. Indeed, Rei had told the Pokemon to be prepared for a counterattack, but now that it was heading straight for her, she was confused.

"Rika, rollover!" Jenny shouted in a bit of a panic. It sounded like the simplest request, like someone training a puppy for obedience, but it was meant in a serious manner.

Paprika knew what her Trainer meant. She started to lean her weight to one side, rolling over onto her back, but Sneasel was much too quick. His restrained attack managed to nick the Eevee's shoulder mid-roll. She froze when she finished rolling, laying on her belly for a moment as she tried to shake off the hit. She didn't like being scratched at all-- not one bit. Paprika stood back up and focused on Sneasel once more, a bit more intent on hitting him now.

Sneasel's eyes sharpened, seeing his claws lightly rake across the Eevee's fur, a few strands of it flying off. He halted, skidding a bit before the momentum wore off. He turned to Rika, readying once more.

"Snea," he said, challenging the Eevee to charge him again. She was already getting faster, and if anyone knew anything about physics, they'd know that speed is part of momentum. Momentum being overall power.

Jenny was watching carefully, biting her lip as Sneasel's claws just barely scratched the Eevee. It was hard watching her Pokemon put herself at risk for being hurt, but such was the way of a Pokemon battle.

The girl was thinking hard as Paprika lowered herself and prepared to pounce once more. Jennifer's eyes lit up as something finally clicked. She had an idea, and though she wasn't sure if it would help, it was worth a shot. "Rika," she called out, "Don't focus so much on your power. Stay light on your feet and worry about your speed!"

Paprika wasn't entirely sure how that would help her. She really wanted to hit Sneasel back-- and hit him hard. Nevertheless, she wasn't about to disobey her Trainer, and instead of winding up to pounce this time, she began shifting her weight upward, keeping off her feet as much as she could.

After a few moments to find her balance in this new mindset, the Eevee dashed at Sneasel once more. This time she wasn't so intent on running in a straight line like a freight train, and she hoped she could follow the Dark type if he tried to dodge.

Sneasel was confident in his ability to dodge the Eevee. That is, until Jenny wised up. By putting all her power into each attack she was being weighed down. Now however, Sneasel's eyes widened. He went to try spinning out of the way once more. Unfortunately for him, he was struck and sent spinning a few feet away. He climbed back to his feet, preparing his claws as he glared at the Eevee.

He went to charge the pup, before a wall of ice materialized before him. He slammed into the wall, shattering it but bringing him to his knees. He looked back to his trainer, clearly the one who had created the wall to begin with.

"This is not a battle, Sneasel," Rei reminded. Sneasel climbed to his feet, gritting his teeth. He wasn't used to being forced to restrain himself. "That's fine though. Since Eevee managed to hit you, she should be stronger." Rei looked to Sneasel, wondering if he'd managed to get any experience from the session.

It took a moment for Paprika to realize she'd hit Sneasel. She knew she'd run into something, and was pleased to discover that it was indeed the Dark type that had been sent spinning away.

The Eevee yipped happily and danced about, almost trotting like a show pony, declaring her superiority. She froze, however, when she realized there was nothing more than a wall of ice blocking Sneasel from unleashing a counterattack during his anger.

Jenny couldn't help but stare in amazement. It was always interesting to watch when Rei used her elemental power, although chilling at the same time.

Paprika was a bit too spooked about Sneasel's sudden attempt to attack to be in awe of Rei's abilities. She finally snapped out of her terror when Jenny called out, "Great job, Rika!"

Kneeling down as best she could, despite the swaying of the tower, Jennifer got down and pet the Eevee gently, then she looked back at Rei. "She really is learning from this, and I think I am, too. Thanks a lot!"

Sneasel gained 45 exp! Sneasel grew to level 17! (1 exp leftover.)

PostSubject: Re: Sparring Match in Sprout Tower!   Sparring Match in Sprout Tower! H6Q0F8zMon May 21, 2012 8:26 am

Max was all healed up and was heading towards the Sprout Tower. While he didn't really want to see Rei that much, all of his pokemon seemed to like her and Jenny was nice as well. As he reached the foot of the tower, he took a long stare up at the magnificent structure that lay before him. It was huge with more floors that he could count and it was beautifully designed, not that Max was big on architecture or anything.

He opened the double doors of the first floor and was amazed by what he saw. While the room itself wasn't all that exciting the giant beam in the middle of the room grabbed his attention instantly. It swayed from side to side amazingly and had strange feel about it. Like it was special in some way. He knew that no one trained on the first floor but he felt no harm in looking around before he went off searching for Jenny and..... Rei. Max still didn't know what it was but that girl still rubbed him the wrong way. And those feelings were clearly reciprocated by her as she had an obvious dislike for Max. He started the wonder why he was even her looking for her but convinced himself it was just to see how Jenny was getting on.

Max stared into the carvings of the bellsprout surrounding the room. He read on a plaque near the front of the room that legend has it that a 100-foot-tall Bellsprout was used to make the swaying pillar. Max never saw bellsprout as that much of an amazing pokemon. But he remembered his dad always said there was never such thing as a bad pokemon, only a bad trainer. The words had truth in them and Max had always been accepting of all pokemon, even if they were considered one of the worst.

As Max lost himself in thought he was disrupted by loud noises coming from the floor above where all the trainers battled. He was usually always up for a battle but after a big gym match he felt his pokemon deserved a rest after putting such a great effort in. He decided to wait in the foyer for Rei and Jenny to finish their training, then he'd talk to them.

Rei ignored Jenny's stares, she had grown used to such things growing up as a 'freak' after all. She embraced it, though. It made her stronger, and merely thought others jealous for their lack of such raw power. She brushed her hands together, powdery snow coming from them rather than dirt. It melted before hitting the ground, of course.

Sneasel rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed. Though Rei had quite the temper herself, she usually handled it through snarky and sarcastic comments. He tried his best to learn from her, ever since they first met. He walked up to Eevee, seeming to give some sort of an apology and congratulations. Naturally, it also seemed to hold some hint of a condescending tone, not that Rika necessarily knew what that was anyway.

Rei looked down at Paprika as she took a few steps toward them. "I'd say she's strong enough- -but only if you're smart in your battle. You can still lose it if you aren't careful." Looking to the stairs, Rei debated training some more herself or heading on to Azalea.

Sighing, she decided. "Well I'm going to rest at the Pokémon Center for the night, then head over to Azalea. Maybe I'll stop at Ruins of Alph first..." she muttered the last bit to herself. "Well, see ya around," Rei said with a flick of her wrist as she and Sneasel headed down the stairs.

A few levels, and Rei was finally to the stairs leading to the first floor. She didn't know if she should feel relieved or what, but all she felt was on edge. There was a static in the air she couldn't quite pin. However, stepping off the stairs she saw the source. The hairs on the back of her neck stood a bit on end, eyes sharpening at the male trainer. He was the source, the anxiety he was feeling. She put a smile on her face instead though, still worse than her usual flat face.

Paprika was still sitting with her chest puffed out in pride, but she was quickly humbled when Sneasel approached, offering what seemed to be an apology. The Eevee yipped happily and proceeded to dance about in her usual playful manner.

Jennifer thought for a few moments before smiling back up at Rei. "Thank you, but... I think Rika and I will stay here just a bit longer. This isn't just about my Pokemon being strong enough. I have to be ready, too." she said, patting Paprika on the head. She wasn't sure how much training they could do without Rei, but Jenny was more focused on mentally preparing herself for the battle ahead.

She was going to stay as long as she felt she needed to in order to train herself and Paprika for the gym battle.

Max was still having a look at all of the statues dedicated to Bellsprout when he felt something get cold. It wasn't the room it was like something inside of him. Whatever it was, it sent a shiver down his spine. He turned around to see who had came rumbling down the stairs. When he saw her he realized why he felt so cold. It was Rei.

Max awkwardly looked around, pretending he didn't notice her at first. He was usually so upfront and bold, why was he acting so nervous? Max decided to stop being stupid and go and talk to Rei. She was smiling which was unusual, but it looked forced. As Max drew closer to her he tried to figure out what to say. His gym victory would be the obvious one, but he wanted to be modest so he decided to open with something different.

'Hey, how goes the training?' Max inquired nervously. It was like poking a snake with a stick, he had no idea how she was going to react.

Rei rubbed her wrists, adjusting her sleeves. It was kind of funny that she would walk around in a sweat shirt when she liked the cold, but she preferred anonymity to comfort. She didn't even really look up when Max approached, confronting her. She simply spoke as she continued her business of making sure everything was fitting properly.

"Well," she said in response to his question. Rather to the point, eh? "She could secure a victory if she tried now. However, she's opted to stay behind and further her training." She tapped her shoes on the floor, testing the laces. They were secure. "I, on the other hand am headed to the center. It's getting late, and Union Cave is dark enough during the day as is. I'll make my way back to Azalea tomorrow," she spoke, sounding more like she was talking to herself than anything. She then began to walk off toward the exit, heading to the Pokémon Center for the evening.

Drawing in a deep breath, Jenny rose back to her feet, taking a moment to steady herself due to the swaying of the tower. She looked down at Paprika, who seemed a bit disheartened that Rei and Sneasel had left. "Don't worry, Rika." Jenny told her. "I'm sure we'll see them again soon."

The Eevee perked up and let out a pleased yip. She was growing quite attached to the other Trainer, and truly enjoyed having Jenny and Rei travel together. Max, too, though Paprika wasn't sure if he was still at the gym right now, she really wanted to see him again as well.

"Okay then. I guess we'll continue training on our own." Jenny took a look around, thinking about how best to use their surroundings to train the Eevee. After feeling the tower sway side to side several times more, Jennifer's eyes lit up. She looked down at Paprika and smiled. "Alright, first thing we're going to do is work on your agility and balance. Okay?"

Paprika let out a bark as she sat up straight, like a soldier in attention.

Jennifer nodded. "Stand up and start sidestepping, first left, then right. Try to keep your eyes on me the whole time." she said.

The Eevee did as she was told, moving side to side while keeping her sights set on her Trainer. It was a bit difficult, sidestepping while the tower swayed, but the Normal type managed it.

"Good," Jenny smiled, "Now do it faster."

Paprika paused for a moment, not at all liking the sound of that, but she obeyed. She began sidestepping faster than before, first left, then right, then left again. It was hard for her to stay mindful of where she was placing her four paws, and she ended up tripping over herself.

Jennifer wanted to rush over and be sure the Pokemon was okay, but something kept her back. She realized she wouldn't be able to do so during a battle, so she needed to get used to rooting for the Eevee while on the sidelines. "Come on, Rika. If this were a battle, the opponent would be all over you by now. Get up and try it again! I know you can do this!" she said enthusiastically.

With a determined yip, Paprika rose back up and resumed her sidestepping.

"That's it! Left, right, left... Excellent!" Jenny instructed as she cheered her Pokemon on.

Before long, the Eevee was able to move side to side with little difficulty, and she'd become quite swift in doing so.

Jenny beamed and knelt down. "Good job, Rika!"

Paprika quickly bounded over to her Trainer, colliding in an embrace as she yipped happily. She was growing tired, though, so Jennifer knew they wouldn't be staying to train much longer.

Rei clearly still had a bad attitude to Max, which he didn't mind because this would probably be the last time he saw her. Funny, even though he didn't like her that much, he definitely didn't hate her like she did him. As he watched her disappear out the front door, he wondered if their paths would cross again, or if this would be the last time he saw the strange girl.

Max decided not to think about it. He thought he may as well see how Jenny was going with her training. He might help her try and catch a pokemon for the gym battle. While he wasn't an expert, he had caught two pokemon excluding Growlithe who was a gift. And even though Rei claims she'd be ready, Max knew that Eevee's tire themselves out easily and Paprika might not be able to last very long.

As he reached the second floor he noticed Jenny and Paprika straight away, doing some speed training. He was impressed by Paprika's speed, she looked stronger, stronger than his own Eevee. He was happy she was in her pokeball otherwise she'd get jealous and start trying to out do Paprika.

'Paprika looks good' Max said, as he reached the two while they were hugging. 'Definitely stronger then when I last saw her.'

Both Jennifer and Paprika glanced up when they heard the other voice speak to them. Upon realizing who it was, Paprika quickly went leaping over to Max and ran a few circles around him.

Jenny laughed and walked over to the other Trainer. "Thanks! Rika's been working really hard." she said, then grew quiet for a few moments. As much as she enjoyed bragging on her Pokemon, she had another question burning in her mind.

"So, how did the battle go? Did you get the badge?" She watched him curiously, a bit worried that he might have lost. But Max was plenty strong to defeat Falkner, right? Surely he would return victorious.

Max smiled as Paprika did a few laps around him. She was playful but determined, just like his own Eevee. Max had been told by various people what to evolve his Eevee into, but he honestly didn't care what happened. He didn't like the idea that he had to choose, it should be Eevee's decision when and if she evolves. Max looked up at Jenny who clearly wanted to ask something by the look on her face and couldn't hold it in. When she finally bursted out, Max knew she'd be asking about the gym battle.

'It went great!' Max said happily, showing the inside of his jacket so Jenny could see the two badges. 'Falkner had skill but not enough to beat us' Max was proud of his victory, but he realized that Jenny would probably be really worried about her upcoming match. He wanted to see if she needed any help.

'Hey I know Rei says you're ready for Falkner, but I reckon another Pokemon in your team could really shape the match' Max suggested. 'How bout you and me go look for another Pokemon for your team tomorrow morning?' Max knew they would find something of use around the Violet City area. He remembered seeing some Wooper and Ekans on the way into the city, and even some Mareep which would be perfect for a battle with Falkner.

Seeing the shiny new badge pinned alongside the Hive Badge that Max had earned, Jenny couldn't help but grin from ear to ear. "I knew it! I knew you would do it!" She beamed, jumping up happily before quickly correcting herself. She bowed respectfully and spoke in a calm tone. "I mean-- I was confident in you and your Pokemon. I expected nothing less." she said.

Paprika didn't care for her Trainer's polite manners. When she saw the badge she barked happily, then danced around a bit more before slowly coming to a stop. She was rather tired now, after all of that training.

As Max suggested they go out to search for more Pokemon to add to Jenny's team, Jennifer watched Paprika as the little Eevee quickly tuckered herself out. The more she thought about it, the more worried she became about the upcoming battle. Another Pokemon on her team would be rather helpful, if something happened to Paprika.

"I'd like that." Jenny said with a smile. "Besides, having another Pokemon couldn't hurt anything, right?" She then picked up her Eevee, who was yawning and shaking out her fur lazily.

"It's getting pretty late. Want to head to the Pokemon Center for the night?"

Max smiled and shook his head as Jenny bowed politely. He had no idea why she did this to him constantly, treating him like an elder rather then a teenager like herself. He laughed as Paprika danced around him, excited about the announcement. Though she was clearly tired after all the training and need a goodnights rest.

Max was happy when Jenny accepted his offer to go searching for another pokemon. It would be great fun looking for pokemon even if they weren't for himself. Max had grown to like the small group that had formed between Max, Jenny and even Rei. While they'd probably go separate ways after Jenny's gym match, he enjoyed hanging out with them. Even Rei had grown on him a little.

'Sounds good' Max said to Jenny's offer. 'It's been a long day and some sleep will do us all some good.'

Jenny simply nodded, grunting in agreement before realizing how impolite it was. She then spoke up, better wording her thoughts. "Yes, indeed."

She couldn't help but feel that when Max said "it's been a long day," it was an amazing understatement. After watching a gym battle for the first time, traveling with Max, even simply experiencing what it was like to battle another Trainer, it was all quite a bit to take in. Even so, Jenny felt strangely more experienced... mature. Like she had learned a lot within the past 24 hours, which she certainly did, thanks to Max and Rei.

With Paprika draped over her shoulders, resting peacefully, Jenny walked with Max out of the tower and back to the Pokemon Center. She called Paprika back to her Pokeball so the nurse could tend to her for a bit, then afterwards they settled in for the night.

Jennifer found it a bit odd how she was so relaxed, despite the gym battle she'd be facing tomorrow. Somehow, being able to train with Rei and knowing that Max would help her find another Pokemon tomorrow seemed to soothe her troubled mind, and she felt that she would have no trouble battling Falkner, thanks to her new friends.

Yep, no trouble at all. Jenny smiled and drifted off to sleep for the night.
