Burton finally continues his journey

Burton touched down, thanking and returning Pidgey. He let Charmander out of her Poke Ball and she stretched, taking in the cool (but quickly warming) winter air.
"Char!" she exclaimed suddenly, pointing out something strange nearby: A Snivy, pulling along two Eggs, one green and the other rainbow, on a large leaf. Almost equally strange was the Snivy's tail- it had four leaves, unlike a the regular three. Burton scanned the Snivy with his Pokedex and found out it was female, knew some unusual moves and had a strange ability, too. He called her over. "Hey, Snivy!"
She looked up and saw him, and her face filled with relief, then suspicion.
She dragged the two"Sni! Vy sni, sniv, iv ivy snivy," she said as she pantomimed finding first the green, and then the rainbow Egg and pulling them along. Then she conveyed that she had realized that it was probably bad for them to be dragged along the rocky, bumpy road unprotected, so she'd found the thick leaf to make the job safer. All without saying a word in English.
"Well, do you want me to help you with it?" Burton asked, seeing the heavy strain it was inducing on her- after all, she was obviously just a baby. She looked pityingly at the Eggs, looked suspiciously at Burton, glanced back at the Eggs unsurely, then glanced back at Burton with something like menace in her eyes.
"Sni, snivy vy nisni, snivy!" she said, pointing at Burton, then the Eggs, making a crunching motion, then back at him, drawing her tail across her throat. Charmander unsuccessfully tried to suppress a snort of mirth at Snivy's obviously portrayed message:
Hurt the Eggs and you're mincemeat.
Burton nodded.
"I promise I'll be careful with them," he said, putting his right hand over his heart and his left in the air, "I promise."
Snivy stopped to consider his vow, then slowly stepped away from the Eggs. Burton scooped them up and tucked them safely into two of his many pockets. As he and Charmander began to walk away from Snivy, she tottered after them.
"Oh, did you need something?" asked Burton, noticing Snivy following him. She actually started laughing, before pointing at Burton, then the pockets with the Eggs and drawing an X over herself.
Burton translated in his head:
Did you honestly think I'd leave you alone with them? Please.
Burton shrugged.
"Okay, come along, then. We're off to fight Misty. But first, I need to stop at the Pokemon Center; there's something I've been meaning to do for a while."
At the Pokemon Center, Burton took all of his Pokemon out of the PC.
"I decided that they should be able to come with, but I'll only put six on my team at a time," he explained to Charmander, "I just couldn't bear to be away from any of you."
Back outside, he set off towards the gym at a hasty clip, Snivy on his shoulder, Charmander in front of him, poking and prodding anything and everything of interest, and Watchog, Mew, the green Egg and Quagsire in his most prominent pockets.
When he got to the gym, he walked right up to Misty.
"Leader Misty, I challenge you to a battle!" he exclaimed, pulling out Watchog's Poke Ball.

The hall was like a giant pool, the cool tiles surrounding it with a few podiums jutting out of the water to help out non-water type Pokemon that challenged the Gym. A young girl, probably around 14 or so, was sitting atop a lifeguard seat at the far end. Her red hair was tied up into a sloppy ponytail off to one side, and she wore a blue bathing suit with an untied towel robe on, making her seem slightly less exposed than she really was. She glanced up from her podium at the boy who entered, and smiled. She hopped down from her position, and approached the boy.

"Hi, you're a new face! Only those Trainers who have a policy about Pokémon can turn pro. What is your approach when you catch and train Pokémon?" she asked momentarily, then spouted, "My policy is an all out offensive with Water Pokémon!" She grinned, a twinkle in her eye ready for battle as she grabbed one of the pokeballs at her waist.

Burton thought for a moment.
"You know, I guess I just catch whoever I find appealing," said Burton. Then, after another moment's consideration, he said, "Although most of my Pokemon seem to have just come to me. Quagsire... Watchog... Epillar... Snivy... The Eggs she had with her... "
He snatched Watchog's Poke Ball.
"Watchog, I guess you're up," he said, letting Watchog out. Watchog had already battled one gym leader, so he may have been a bit more ready for it than the others.

Misty watched as the boy released his Watchog, the light revealing the rather odd looking Pokemon, only vaguely resembling a prairie dog. With the Pokemon in place on its podium, Misty snatched up her pokeball. She tossed it out into the ring, the ball bursting open in sudden light. The light quickly took form, and the ball bounced back to Misty, who quickly caught it with skill. A tan Pokemon shaped like a star, with a rather large gem in the center of it that seemed to be held on with gold plating. It sparkled like the jewel had a life all its own

"Go Staryu!" Misty called excitedly. The Pokemon let out a cry, which sounded similar to someone crying out while kicking something hard with a hya, hya! The Pokemon quickly dove off its platform, and into the pool where it felt more comfortable.

"I suppose the beginning of the battle would be a good time to do that..." Burton muttered to himself. Making up his mind, he shouted, "Watchog, use Bide!" Watchog began to store the power of everything that hurt him.

Quickly recognizing the move, Misty nodded. "Alright, Staryu, use your Harden!" she called out. Staryu began to glow a bit, then the light went down. Its skin seemed shinier, and thicker now, raising its defense.

Burton cursed, but he was only able to watch since Bide was still going on.

Misty smiled, jumping excitedly a bit, her hands in little balled up fists held close to her body. "Good job, Staryu, again, use harden!" after a hya, hya, Staryu's body again glistened, hardening its defense.

Burton sighed as Watchog tried to release power at Staryu and failed.
"Well then, Watchog, use Confuse Ray," said Burton, pointing to where Staryu was in the water. Watchog created a large, yellow ball of energy and shot it towards Staryu. But when it hit the water it spread out, going in all directions. A lot of it did continue towards Staryu, though, and Burton hoped it wouldn't dilute and fail.

As the confusing rays spread through the water, Staryu only became mildly disoriented. "Uh oh..." said Misty, slightly worried. "Umm...alright Staryu...Let's do this, try to snap out of it! Use Water Pulse!" she called out, pointing to the Watchog. Staryu heard the command, and shot out of the water, flying through the air. It struggled to find itself, but managed to locate Watchog on the field, and spouted a pulsing blast of water at the Watchog!

Watchog tried to dodge instinctively, but ended up falling into the water. With his short little arms and legs, he wasn't able to get out.
"Watchog!" exclaimed Burton, reaching for Watchog's Poke Ball.
"Wa!" said Watchog, motioning for Burton to stop.
"You think you can fight a Staryu in the water?" asked Burton sceptically. Watchog just nodded.
"Well, okay... Use Crunch." Watchog dove underwater, using his long tail to propel himself like a Buizel. He swam to where Staryu had landed in the water and closed in, teeth wide; Burton was reminded forcibly of Jaws.

Staryu had no time to dodge, as Watchog closed in right as it landed. "Staryu!" Misty cried out, as she watched Watchog crunch into her beloved water Pokemon. Luckily, it didn't do too severe of damage, since Staryu had hardened twice now. Misty let out a slight sigh of relief. "Alright, Staryu, use your tackle on that Watchog!" she called out. Staryu let out a hya, then charged quickly through the water, turning around then picking up speed to try and smash into the enemy.

The Tackle hit and Watchog fell backwards under water. He shook it off though, and swam up to the surface for breath and instruction.
"Use Hypnosis," said Burton, and Watchog took a deep breath, diving back down. He swam up to Staryu, and put his hands together, half closing his eyes. As he drew his hands apart, black ripples of psychic energy expanded from the point where they had touched, washing over Staryu.

Staryu couldn't help resist the waves of psychic energy, and fell asleep, sinking to the bottom of the pool. "No, Staryu!" Misty cried out, "Wake up Staryu, please!"

As Watchog came up for another breath, Burton shouted "Good, Watchog! Now use Low Kick."
"Wa," Watchog gasped, taking several deep breaths and diving back down to the bottom of the pool. Upon reaching Staryu, he flipped over in the water, his foot out. The momentum of swimming and flipping added slightly to the power of the kick but the water slowed it down so it sort of evened out.

Staryu took the hit, unable to dodge or counter since it was fast asleep. It didn't do an overly large amount of damage, Staryu not exactly being the heaviest of opponents, but it still did some. Misty gritted her teeth, wanting badly for her Pokemon to wake up. Staryu remained fast asleep, unable to wake yet.

Watchog glanced up at Burton, who made an obvious biting motion with his arms as Watchog probably couldn't see his mouth through the water. Watchog swam down and bit down hard on Staryu's leg, using Bite (obviously).

Staryu awoke with a startle as the attack hit, and cried out in agony. It seemed Staryu was in a bad place now. "Staryu, use recover!" Misty called, to which Staryu escaped the jaw of Watchog and began to glow, restoring some of its HP.

Watchog surfaced again.
"Crunch. Make it count," said Burton simply. Watchog swam down, and directly at Staryu. He opened his jaws wide, ready to Crunch Staryu...

"Staryu, dodge it!" Misty called out, but it was too late, and the crunch connected. Staryu took a good deal of damage, then automatically retaliated with a water pulse attack! "Go Staryu, go!" Misty cheered on.

Watchog tried to swim away from Water Pulse, but he was too slow. It hit him and carried him out of the water. He plopped down onto the same podium he had been on before.
"Watchog!" called Burton, seeing that Watchog wasn't standing. But Watchog did, and looked around in a disoriented manner.
"Oh, good," said Burton in relief, "use Crunch again." Watchog looked around, his eyes narrowed, and proceeded to slip on the water, causing himself a bit of damage.
"Oh, great. You're confused," said Burton.

Misty jumped up excitedly. "Alright, good job, Staryu!" Misty called out excitedly. "Use tackle on that Watchog now!" Staryu spun, zooming through the water until it broke through the surface, flying at Watchog with its tackle attack.

"Watchog, Bide, NOW!" said Burton, waving frantically at Watchog. Watchog screwed up his face for a few seconds... And then it was like a light bulb went on, and he was outlined in a white light just before Staryu crashed into him. Burton had mixed emotions about that.

Misty grumbled, but knew watchog must have at least been weak by that point. "Staryu, we already hit it hard, so let's try to go for a k.o. while it's using bide!" she called out, then pointed at the glowing foe, "Use your water pulse again!" Staryu let out its Hya, then spouted a massive pulse of water from its point at the Watchog, hoping to do serious damage since Staryu was bound to be taking double, more than enough to k.o. it anyway.

Water Pulse slammed hard into Watchog and he fell into the water.
"Watchog?" called Burton tentatively, unsure whether Watchog was fainted or conscious. Then he saw a twitchy motion, a swish of brown under the ripples created by Watchog's fall. The twitch turned into a shudder and Burton's hopes skyrocketed. And finally, Watchog shot at Staryu, easily doing 15-20 MPH through the water. Burton let out a whoop, then, embarrassed calmed down to watch Watchog's progress through the water.
